Yesterday my daughter and I went to a Preview Day at one of the schools she is considering for college. I can’t believe that my baby girl is now 17, a senior in high school, and now college bound. Though I am extremely happy for her and her future, I am also starting to get a little sad. Being a single mom has been wonderful, though also hard at times. There were a lot of lessons learned that I still need to share with her. I wouldn’t change this experience for the world. However, time is running out. Before I know it, graduation will be here, and we’ll be on the official countdown to her leaving.
Seeing her on this college visit told me that she is really is ready to start her future. She blended in with the other students beautifully. I realized what I’ve known, but wasn’t ready to accept….my baby girl was truly all grown up. Here’s a picture of us with the mascot…This was fun.
Wherever she decides to go to school, I know in my heart that she will do well. My question is, will I? It’s been “us two against the world” (as she says) for so long and when it’s time for her to go, it’s going to take a lot for me to not act a fool when that time comes. She is not only my daughter, she is also my biggest cheerleader while pursuing my dreams. I couldn’t have come this far without her. She is my “why” in my reason for doing this.
Who do you have in your corner as you pursue your dreams? Maybe I should ask, what or who is your “why” for pursuing your dreams? This is important as when you get down and out (like I am a little bit right now), then you’ll remember “why” you’re doing this (pursuing your dream) in the first place. It’s at that time, you’ll be inspired to keep going. My daughter inspires me to keep moving forward in this quest of mine. There have been days when I have been ready to give up the pursuit. Just know, it’s not today.
My question is for all the single moms out there that had their kids leave for college. How did you prepare for it? Is it really as bad as I think it’s going to be? Please let me know. I would love to hear from you.
